Officials reduce HS football player contact to lowest level yet

ROBBINSVILLE -

State scholastic athletics officials have reduced the amount player-on-player practice contact allowed per week to its lowest level yet.

The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) approved a ruling that puts limits on practice-field contact for players.

Under the rules:

  • In-season full-contact practices will be reduced from 90 minutes per week to 15 minutes per week.
  • Pre-season full-contact practices will be reduced from unlimited to six hours total, including scrimmages.

Full contact practices are already banned during the spring and summer seasons.

The NJSIAA says that the new rules were put into place after a proposal by the New Jersey Football Coaches Association and are designed to limit concussions and to keep players healthy and safe during the season.

The organization says the rules now make New Jersey’s year-round high school practice regulations “the most restrictive ever at any level of football.”
