An 80-year-old Saddle Brook man died Thursday after he was struck by an out-of-control car that jumped a curb and pinned him to a brick pillar.
The crash happened outside the Spencer Savings Bank on Market Street in Saddle Brook, right in front of the Spencer Savings Bank.
Witnesses say that a black Chevy Malibu appeared to lose control, jumped the curb and hit the man.
A worker at the nearby Subway restaurant tells News New Jersey that she heard the crash and rushed out to see what happened.
"I heard a lot of screeching and brake slamming. I ran outside and saw someone laying on the ground that may be one of our customers. It was really traumatizing,” says Danielle Obssuth.
It apparently took first responders some time to free the man from behind the car. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The driver of the Malibu was identified as a 91-year-old woman from Elmwood Park. She was escorted away by family members to one of the nearby stores. The car appeared to have a handicapped placard.
The victim’s name has not been released. It is unclear if any charges will be filed.
