The Monmouth County prosecutor says a man from Brick has been arrested in connection with the stabbing of a woman in Long Branch.

According to police, when an officer arrived Tuesday around 9:40 a.m. on scene, he saw Michael Smith, 43, swinging and grabbing at the victim who was lying on the ground.

Police say Smith was armed with two knives.

The woman, 34, also from Brick, has been hospitalized in stable condition.

Smith is set to appear in court Monday.

He has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, among other charges.

If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
