Customers warned about hepatitis A exposure at New Jersey Dunkin’ Donuts

OCEAN CITY -

Customers who shop at a Jersey Shore Dunkin’ Donuts are being warned about potential exposure to hepatitis A.

Cape May County health officials say that an employee of the doughnut shop located at 962 West Ave. in Ocean City has been confirmed to have the illness. The employee was working at the shop at the time that they were potentially infectious, which was between Jan. 27 and Jan. 31.

Health officials say that while the risk of infection to customers who ate or drank at the shop during that time is low, it is recommended that they receive “post-exposure prophylaxis” or PEP, which “consists of hepatitis A vaccine and/or immune globulin.”

Potentially exposed customers should try to receive the vaccine no later than Feb. 14 to be effective, according to officials.

Hepatitis A is a contagious liver disease, which is usually spread when a person ingests fecal matter, even in microscopic amounts. Symptoms may include fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, joint pain and jaundice.

More information can be found at the Ocean City town website.
