Are we going overboard on who we tip for services?
Flight attendants on Frontier Airlines have been given the go-ahead to accept gratuities from passengers on their flights.
The practice now begs the question – who should be receiving tips for services and how much is expected?
“Tipping is a gesture and a ‘thank you’ for good service,” says etiquette trainer Mary Harris.
Harris says that there are some general rules to follow when it comes to tipping. She says that for hair stylists, nail salons or facials, customers should tip 15 to 20 percent. The same goes for waiters and waitresses at restaurants.
“Valet and parking garage – that would be $2 to $5 a car,” she says.
Harris says that anyone delivering anything large to your home should get $10 to $20 per person, depending on how complicated the move is.
Harris also says that at the end of the year, employees like dog walkers, hair stylists and housekeepers should be tipped an extra week’s pay.
But what about the new trend of tipping flight attendants?
“There’s nothing wrong with it, but it’s not expected,” says Harris. “Same with your mechanic. They’re professionals. They’re not really in the service industry.”
Harris also reminds consumers that if they are using any sort of coupon for services to tip according to the original price.
