Effective immediately: Grab those re-usable bags if you plan on shopping in Hoboken

Posted: Updated:
HOBOKEN -

Hoboken has become the latest town in New Jersey to ban single-use plastic bags at retailers and restaurants.

The town becomes the first in Hudson County, and 16th municipality overall, in the state to do so.

Starting today, businesses can no longer give out single-use plastic bags, but will sell re-usable ones if you don't have them, as well as paper bags for 10-25 cents.

Signs were posted on the doors at the local ShopRite.

"We've used all that plastic for way too long,” says Hoboken resident Dustin Garlock. “You can see it everywhere. Drive anywhere in New Jersey and you can see plastic bags so it's about time. It's going to stink for a little bit, but too bad. You've just got to get used to it."

In Hoboken, if you're on welfare, you will not have to pay for the bags, even though businesses can also apply to be exempt from the ordinance.
