A section of the Long Island Expressway was shut down for hours Wednesday due to a crash caused by a reckless driver, according to police.
The westbound crash happened around 3:50 p.m. between exits 58 and 59.
Police say 19-year-old Louis Dimuro was speeding and weaving through traffic in a BMW when he lost control and slammed into a Jeep, causing the Jeep to flip over multiple times. Traffic was halted for the evening commute.
Four people who were injured, including one seriously, were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
Dimuro was not hurt. He was arrested and charged with reckless driving.
Vincent Scimeca, of Holtsville, was trying to get to work in Queens but wound up sitting in traffic for hours and almost ran out of gas. He said it took about 2 1/2 hours to travel 3 miles.
Nelly Amaya and her husband were heading to Lincoln Center in Manhattan to see the show "Shen Yun." But they missed the show and lost nearly $400 they shelled out for the tickets.
