White supremacist group plans to host weekend rally in New Jersey

LONG BEACH ISLAND -

The mayor of Princeton says she is against a white supremacist group planning to host a rally over the weekend, but she says there is nothing that can be done to stop it from happening.

The group planning the rally calls itself the New Jersey European Heritage Association, and they apparently are planning Saturday to host a march.

Police, as well as Mayor Liz Lempert, say they don't condone the rally, but also can't stop it.

"Our police are aware and are taking all the necessary precautions to ensure everyone's safety, and are encouraging any counterprotesters to keep a safe distance and avoid direct confrontation,” says Mayor Lempert. “These individuals have a right to free speech, however, despicable their message of hate, bigotry and ignorance. We stand in opposition to this twisted attempt to spew hate."

Flyers are being seen posted on kiosks opposing this event.

One flyer is asking groups to come out in large numbers to shut them down and deny them space to rally.

Any groups or people who want to counterprotest are encouraged to register with the police department so they can obtain a permit and police can ensure everyone has a safe space.
