TSA workers go without pay as government shutdown continues

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY -

Employees with the Transportation Security Administration are currently not getting paid due to the partial government shutdown, which has resulted in some callouts.

TSA employees check baggage at airports before flight passengers board their planes. They are considered "essential" federal employees and are supposed to report for duty and work for free during the shutdown.

So far, callouts have been seen at JFK, Dallas-Fort Worth, Charlotte and Raleigh airports. "Security effectiveness will not be compromised and performance standards will not change," said Michael Bilello, a TSA spokesman. "Wait times may be affected depending on the number of call outs." TSA and Homeland Security have been without funding since Dec. 22.

President Donald Trump has said he won't lift the government shutdown until he gets funding for a border wall.

The opposition has said the two issues shouldn't be tied together.

The TSA says it’s grateful for the agents who show up to work and they eventually will be compensated.
