MORRISTOWN -

Morris County residents celebrated the start of 2019 with the annual “First Night” event – one of the largest celebrations in New Jersey.

The celebration took place at the Morristown Green and 21 other venues around the town. This is the 27th year of the Morristown First Night event.

About 10,000 people were expected to attend the event, which included fireworks displays at 9:15 p.m. and midnight.

The program featured 70 events: dance, theater, visual arts, world cultures, children's program and music -- including rock, jazz, blues, classical and more.

First Night is alcohol- and substance-free, so organizers say that it was a perfect event for families.

The first First Night was held in Boston in 1975.
