Surgical center faces lawsuits for potentially exposing patients to HIV

SADDLE BROOK -

A Bergen County surgical center is facing several lawsuits after patients were potentially exposed to HIV and hepatitis.

New Jersey health officials say that poor sterilization practices at the HealthPlus Surgery Center in Saddle Brook could have led to patients being exposed to the illnesses. About 3,700 people were exposed.

“Many of them are married or have significant others. So we believe that the potential exposure expands far beyond the patients themselves. But to their loved ones, marital partners, life partners,” says attorney Michael Maggiano, who filed a class-action lawsuit.

The suit claims health care providers were reckless and negligent.

Two employees have been filed.
