NYC officials: NYPD prepared to handle New Year’s Eve security

“You will be safe.” – That’s the message New York City officials are telling anyone who is attending New Year’s Eve festivities in Times Square.
City and police officials held a news conference Friday detailing security protocols for Monday’s celebration.
“It’s going to be one of the most well-policed, best-protected events and one of the safest venues in the entire world,” said NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill.
Officials say that although there are no current credible threats against the celebration, they will remain vigilant.
“You’ll see a lot of officers with a lot of gear and long guns and the kinds of weaponry needed for securing such a huge event,” said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. “There will obviously be measures you won’t see as well.”
Officials say that more than 60 sanitation trucks and nearly 200 police cars will block off intersections leading to the pedestrian areas. More than 50 K-9 teams will also mingle with the crowds looking for any dangerous materials.
Police also say that for the first time, a fleet of drones will patrol the skies, keeping watch over the celebration.
“The NYPD’s intense presence is part of what makes this event work,” the mayor said.
More than 2 million people are expected to crowd in to Times Square for the celebration. Revelers will face multiple screening points. Backpacks, large bags, umbrellas and alcohol will be prohibited.
