Union County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that could help solve the 2016 killing of a Plainfield restaurant owner.
Shamar Coleman was shot and killed inside Seafood Rama on East Second Street in Plainfield on Dec. 29, 2016. Coleman owned the restaurant. No arrests have been made.
Coleman’s family tells News 12 New Jersey that Coleman was a kind man, who would feed whomever walked into the restaurant, whether they had money or not.
“He always helped everybody out,” says his mother Angela Coleman. “But some people are jealous of others.”
Angela Coleman says that she remembers the last conversation that she had with her son before he died.
"He said ‘I'm going to give you some money to take the kids to the movies,’ he said, ‘but I also want you to get your hair done.’ I said ‘OK baby, I will,’" she recalls.
Authorities have rereleased surveillance video of a person of interest in the case in the hope that it helps stir someone’s memory.
The person in the video can be seen exiting and entering the passenger’s side of what appears to be a small Volkswagen sedan parked outside the restaurant around the time of the shooting. The man appears to be wearing distinctive clothing, including bright blue pants, white sneakers, a dark facial covering and a hooded sweatshirt that appears to be black on the bottom and light gray on the top, according to police.
Police also say that the Volkswagen was stolen out of Newark shortly before the homicide.
"We are hoping someone may have seen the car in the area at the time it was stolen. And maybe they'd be willing to come forward,” says Sgt. Johnny Ho with the Union County Homicide Task Force.
Police say that Coleman was inside his restaurant talking with a friend and the friend’s 5-year-old daughter just before the shooting. Coleman was shot multiple times, but the friend and young girl were unharmed.
Anyone who may have any information regarding the killing should contact Union County Crime Stoppers by calling 908-654-TIPS (8477) or by going to the website www.uctip.org.
