Suspect killed during 7-hour hostage situation identified

NEWARK -

The man fatally shot by a SWAT team in Newark who was holding a woman hostage at gunpoint following a hourslong standoff has been identified.

According to authorities, Sean Sharpe, 54, of Orange, was killed Saturday following a 7-hour hostage situation that began Friday just before 10 p.m.

Authorities say Sharpe forced his ex-girlfriend into her home at gunpoint.

She was able to escape when the SWAT team arrived.

The suspect was shot when he pointed his gun at the woman.

The woman was not injured.
