The Nassau County Legislature voted unanimously Monday to allow the developers of the massive Nassau "Hub" development to proceed.
Presiding Officer Rich Nicolello says the current plan represents the best chance to move forward at a location where development has stalled for years.
As News 12 has reported, BSE Global and RXR want to build what they call a "live, work, play" development on the property surrounding Nassau Coliseum, anchored by a 225,000-square-foot Northwell Health research center.
Several legislators, both Democrats and Republicans, had expressed various concerns about the proposal in recent weeks. But not one reiterated those concerns on Monday. Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams says he supports the project now that the developers have agreed to employ union workers and develop a community-benefits deal based on the recommendations of an advisory committee.
The meeting featured several speakers in favor of the plan, including union leaders and workers. The Uniondale committee was also well-represented. Civic leader Pearl Jacobs says the presence of a community-benefits agreement sealed the deal for her.
The developers have cleared a major hurdle, but all of the stakeholders agree that further legislative approval will be required as the project starts to take shape.
BSE global and RXR have said that a formal proposal will be ready in 24 to 36 months.
