SPCA wants people picking up holiday pets to 'adopt instead of shop'

The SPCA says it wants anyone thinking about getting a pet this season to "adopt instead of shop."
David Ceely, of Little Shelter Animal Rescue in Huntington, says pets sometimes end up back in shelters weeks after the holidays.
Shelter officials are encouraging Long Islanders to adopt a pet from a shelter instead of buying one from a pet store. They say shelters will make sure the pet is medically and behaviorally evaluated -- and they'll spay, neuter, vaccinate and microchip the dog for a fraction of the price.
The Suffolk SPCA says shelters have pets ready for adoption for the holidays.
The Nassau SPCA says it will help with adoption costs for shelters located in the towns of Hempstead, North Hempstead, Oyster Bay and Long Beach.
