A 72-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run in Newark Friday afternoon, Essex County authorities say.
Witnesses say that the man was struck by a garbage truck, while trying to walk across the intersection. Lincoln Park and Pennsylvania Avenue. The driver did not stay at the scene.
The man’s cane and winter hat were still at the scene while detectives investigated the crash.
“An old man with a cane, just walking slow across the street. [The truck] game flying around the corner,” says witness John Spearman.
Witnesses say that cars often travel too fast in the area.
The name of the victim was not released by police.
A spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office says that no charges have been filed, but that detectives are speaking with the alleged driver.
