Authorities: Men killed in fiery crash in Glen Ridge were fleeing police

A fiery crash that killed two men in Essex County Monday night occurred shortly after the driver had fled from a traffic stop, according to authorities.
Essex County prosecutors say Montclair police tried to stop the car driven by Galo Flores on Monday night, but he instead drove away at a high speed. The officers pursued the car with their overhead lights activated, but Flores struck a light pole in Glen Ridge.
The impact caused the car to hit a tree and catch fire. The 25-year-old Harrison man was killed, along with his passenger, 20-year-old Carlos Nieves, of Newark.
The men were the only people in the car. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities haven't said what spurred the traffic stop.
The Professional Standards Bureau of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the crash. Officials say that this is standard when a police pursuit ends with a serious injury or death.
