A new art exhibit is giving people on the autism spectrum a chance to express themselves.

“Art Speaks Piece by Piece” is currently on exhibit at the Volition Gallery in Orangeburg, New York, just over the New Jersey border.

The gallery put out a call for artists from New York and New Jersey who have autism or other developmental disabilities. 49 artists submitted paintings, photographs and other forms of art for the exhibit.

“They’re self-taught artists without a stitch of training … They paint what's in their mind, and what even further amazes me is that it comes from a place of joy, and heart and freedom,” says gallery owner Phyllis Dodge. “The artwork that's on the walls in the installation is amazing. It’s exemplary."

The artists range in age from 7 to 40 years old.

The exhibit will be on display until Jan. 6.
