Prosecutor: Motive in fatal mansion fire may have been financial issues

Posted: Updated:
ASBURY PARK -

Monmouth County Prosecutor Chris Grammicioni said the motive in the fatal Colts Neck mansion fire may have been financial issues related to their two jointly related businesses in Asbury Park.

The Caneiro brothers had two businesses on Cookman Avenue. Paul and Keith Caneiro owned and operated a computer systems company called Square One, as well as a pest control business called Ecostar Pest Management.

According to the Square One website, the business was founded back in 1987 to provide professional services to businesses. Keith Caneiro hired Paul Caneiro as his first employee at Square One.

News 12 New Jersey spoke with several business owners who say they didn't have much interaction with the brothers, but do say Keith Caneiro recently fired Paul Caneiro, but that has not been confirmed by prosecutors.

Paul Caneiro has been charged with four counts of murder.

Gramiccioni says Paul Caneiro shot his brother, shot and stabbed Jennifer Caneiro, and then stabbed his niece and nephew, 11 and 8 years old, just two days before Thanksgiving.
