The state's 'Click it or Ticket' campaign is back just in time for Thanksgiving travel, the Connecticut Department of Transportation announced.
The DOT and local and state law enforcement have paired up through Nov. 26. to enforce the use of seat belts.
According to state law, anyone riding in the front seat of a vehicle, regardless of their age, must wear a seat belt. All rear-seat passengers between 4 and 16 years old must be restrained by an appropriate safety system. The fine for not wearing a seat belt could be as much as $140.
Officials say the campaign aims to remind motorists and passengers to wear a seat belt every time they enter a vehicle.
Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel times of the year and the increased number of vehicles on the road means an increased likelihood of crashes.
Research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that during the 2016 Thanksgiving holiday weekend, there were 341 passengers of cars killed in traffic crashes across the nation and 49 percent of those killed were not wearing seat belts.
Across the state last year there were more than 500 car accidents, 2 people who died, 1,000 speeding infractions and 50 DUI arrests during the Thanksgiving holiday, officials say.
