Sorting it out: Brookhaven changes its recycling plan

The Town of Brookhaven is going back to dual-stream recycling -- meaning paper, plastic and metals will have to be put in separate containers.
Several years ago, Brookhaven and other towns allowed homeowners to put all recyclables in one container. The town says it's switching back because fewer companies are buying so-called "contaminated" recyclables, which are mixed together and practically worthless on the world market.
Town Supervisor Ed Romaine says on alternating weeks starting Nov. 28, the town will pick up only separated clean plastic and metal items. Paper and cardboard pickup is the following week.
One of the big changes in Brookhaven's new recycling plan is that well glass is no longer accepted. Romaine says there will be sites set up throughout the town to dispose of that.
Environmentalists applaud the change to dual stream because it produces better recyclable materials. But some worry that people won't want to take the extra step to cart used glass to a community dumpster.
