Absolute chaos: Snowstorm causes gridlock around New Jersey
A November snowstorm caused absolute chaos around the state during the Thursday evening commute.
Almost every major highway in the state experienced heavy traffic delays as people tried to leave work early to beat the storm.
Thursday’s snowstorm was much worse than forecasters originally predicted. Snow plows were not able to clear the roadways on time and conditions worsened.
New Jersey State Police say that they responded to at least 486 crashes on state roadways and over 700 calls for assistance. Fortunately no one was seriously injured.
News 12 New Jersey viewers reported being stuck in heavy traffic on Interstate-280, Interstate-80, the New Jersey Turnpike, and the Garden State Parkway. Commuters told News 12 that drives that normally take 30 minutes took over five hours due to the conditions.
There is a 35 mph speed restriction on the New Jersey Turnpike from the Delaware Memorial Bridge to the George Washington Bridge.
Drivers were urged to drive slowly and patiently in order to get home safely. State officials urged residents to stay off the roads for the evening if possible.
