A Bronx man is being praised for his efforts to help rescue a family trapped inside a burning apartment.
Officials say the apartment was set ablaze by one of the family's loved ones, who is now facing charges.
All six people in the apartment made it out alive. But the damage could have been much worse if it wasn't for the efforts of neighbor and family friend Oshane Williams, who just got home from working a long overnight shift at Target at the time of the fire.
"Trust me, I wasn't even thinking," he recalls. "The moment I ran out -- just knock it down and go in and do what I had to do. I have no fear."
Authorities say Ricardo McDonald had just thrown scalding oil on his family before using a couch to barricade their Wakefield apartment that had caught fire. Williams, a fifth-floor neighbor, stumbled upon McDonald's grandmother trapped behind the barricaded door. He says he pulled her out.
McDonald's daughter and her baby escaped, along with his son and mother. But Williams wasn't sure if anyone else was inside at the time. Williams says McDonald tried to lock himself inside of the burning apartment, but he managed to also pull him out and hold McDonald until police arrived.
Police say McDonald faces attempted murder, assault and arson charges. After being arrested, McDonald was hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation. His family was taken to New York City Health + Hospitals/Jacobi to be treated for serious burns.
