Voters in Union County were able to try out a new type of voting machine this Election Day.
The Express Vote XL machine includes a paper trail that is verified by the voter.
Voters are able to make their selection using the touch screen, and then a paper ballot is printed so that the voter can check for accuracy. Then they cast their final vote.
The paper ballots are also deposited into the machine so that they can be used during recounts.
Election officials were on hand to help explain the new machine to voters.
This is the first of its kind in New Jersey. Previously New Jersey voters did not have a paper backup.
Each county in the state is in line to move to the new machines in the upcoming years.
