Oakland has become the latest town in New Jersey to ban recreational marijuana sales.

The newly adopted ordinance prohibits the creation of retail stores, cultivation facilities, manufacturing and other distribution.

The ordinance exempts medical weed, dispensaries, and caregivers.

Many towns are acting in anticipation to a year-end vote on the legalization of the drug.

Oakland joins a number of boroughs in North Jersey with similar bans in place, with the most recent being Old Tappan.

The neighboring towns of Franklin Lakes, Wyckoff, and Woodcliff Lake have also banned recreational weed within town zoning areas.

Several towns in Monmouth and Ocean counties, including Oceanport, Barnegat and Wall, passed ordinances over the past few months.

Point Pleasant Beach was one of the first, passing its ban back in December.
