The Maplewood Police Department is honoring those who served by hosting a 5K race on Veterans Day with the goal of raising enough money to provide a local veteran with a service dog.
The department is teaming with the group Troopers Assisting Troops. They will need to raise $15,000 to cover the cost of training and equipment for the veteran and the dog. They are selling T-shirts to go along with the money raised in the race.
The group also wants to bring more awareness about veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.
“All the dogs that are provided are rescue dogs since they are saved,” says Troopers Assisting Troops vice president Drew Leib. “The veteran himself in many cases were on the verge of suicide and the dogs help them to get out of that mode.”
Maplewood police have not yet picked a veteran to receive the dog. They are asking the public to reach out to them if they know any deserving veterans.
The 5K race will be held Sunday, Nov. 11.
