The Cos Cob School in Greenwich will be closed for at least the rest of this week due to a water leak over the weekend.
Administrators say they're working with professionals to assess the water damage, test the air quality and determine exactly what repairs are necessary before they open the school doors up to students again.
According to administrators, a pipe broke in a classroom on the second floor, causing a leak. It was only discovered Sunday night when falling ceiling tiles set off motion detectors. The damage spans several rooms on both the first and second floors where kindergarten to second-grade classes are held.
"The district is being very careful and they're looking at the full extent of the damage and taking the most extreme steps to address any potential aftermath of this," says Greenwich First Selectman Peter Tesei.
Tesei says according to the superintendent grades 3-5 will remain at the school. Administrators say they are looking into relocating the other students.
"I'm not sure what they're going to do, if there's going to be a make-up time for the classes or how they're going to facilitate that, but certainly if it drags on for more than a few days I think they'll have to come up with some kind of interim situation," says Stephanie Asmis, of Greenwich.
The Greenwich Boys and Girls Club has offered child care services for the remainder of this week at no cost.
Wednesday's fifth-grade field trip and Thursday's open house have been canceled. Administrators say the open house will be rescheduled.
There will be a meeting for parents at 7 p.m. Thursday at Central Middle School.
