Area of Newark shut down following police shooting

NEWARK -

An area of Newark was shut down after a police-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities have not released many details, but say that the incident happened around 3:45 p.m. near Lehigh Avenue and Bergen Street.

Police way that members of the Newark Police Department and Essex County Sheriff's’s Office were in the area on a separate investigation, when they heard gunshots. They found one person dead and then exchanged gunfire with another person.

That person was injured in the shooting by police and taken to the hospital and is in custody.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating.
