An annual military tradition continued with a twist in Sea Girt Sunday.

Gov. Phil Murphy was at the National Guard Training Center in Sea Girt for the annual military review.

The 126-year-old tradition gives the governor, who is also the commander in chief of the state’s National Guard, an opportunity to inspect and review the troops.

"Our commander in chief gets to see what a diverse organization he has and what capabilities we can do -- and whether there is a state or federal mission, this National Guard is ready to serve,” said Lt. Col. Barbara Brown-Wilson.

This year’s event was moved inside because of the rain, and went on without some of the traditional outdoor pomp and circumstance, including a military parade and fly-overs. But it did go on with awards, promotions, retirements and a public oath of enlistment for a new class of recruits.

There are about 8,000 army and air service members with New Jersey’s National Guard.
