The mayor of Hoboken says that he is fed up with water main breaks in his city and wants to change the water utility company that services Hoboken.
Mayor Ravi Bhalla says that after 18 water main breaks in Hoboken this summer, his residents are frustrated. The city administration and council has moved to begin accepting bids for a new water company to replace SUEZ Water.
SUEZ has supplied water to Hoboken since the 1990s. While the city owns the aging water pipes that have broken, Bhalla says that he believes that the water company should do a better job of maintaining them.
“Hoboken itself has made, on its own volition, major multimillion capital investments into water mains in the last two years along Washington Street as well as other high-priority areas,” Bhalla says. “We’re looking to add on those investments by retaining a water operator that can also join and partner with us.”
The mayor says that bids will be accepted shortly and that the city can then look at its options.
SUEZ Water has maintained that the problems with Hoboken’s water mains are due to the aging infrastructure.
