A fast-moving fire severely damaged a popular tavern in Ocean County.

The fire at Caffrey's Tavern in Lacey Township broke out around 9 a.m. Wednesday, sending heavy flames and thick smoke through the roof. Numerous firefighters battled the blaze for about four hours before it was brought under control, and crews remained on the scene late Wednesday afternoon.

No injuries were reported in the fire. It's not clear whether anyone was in the tavern when the fire started.

Authorities say the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Witnesses tell News 12 New Jersey that it is possible that the fire started in the kitchen of the tavern.

Caffrey's Tavern was a popular hangout in Lacey Township. Some town residents were seen crying as they watched the fire department work to put out the flames.

“This is one of the last landmarks we’ve got in town. Didn't want to see it go. Unfortunately there's not much left,” says Brandon Krill.

The owners say that they plan to rebuild the restaurant.

“We are definitely going to come back strong,” says general manager Matthew Reilly. “The owners already said we’re going to make it better and stronger.

Traffic was detoured around the fire scene for several hours, causing some travel delays in the area.
