2 firefighters injured in fire that gutted Holmdel home
Two firefighters were injured while fighting a blaze that destroyed a Monmouth County home.
The fire started around 7 a.m. in Holmdel on Barrister Drive. Fire crews were fighting it well after 10 a.m.
The family and their pets were able to get out uninjured with the help of police officers.
A gas grill that may have been left on overnight may be the cause of the fire.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the fire. One tripped and fell a few feet through a staircase. The other suffered minor smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion, according to police.
The home is likely to be a total loss.
On average, gas grills are involved in 3,300 structure fires each year. According to the National Fire Protection Association, 12 percent of gas grill structure fires were caused by leaks or breaks.
The exact cause of this fire remains to be determined. The county fire marshal is investigating.
