(AP) - An environmental group suing the city of Newark over alleged systemic violations of clean water rules wants to force the city to take immediate measures while the lawsuit proceeds.
In a court filing Friday, the group asked a judge to order the city to provide alternate water supplies for vulnerable residents and provide free testing for all residents.
The lawsuit filed in June by the Natural Resources Defense Council and an association of educators alleges the city hasn't adequately monitored and tested a water system it says contains "dangerously high" levels of lead.
The city has called the allegations "outrageously false" and says the water complies with state and federal regulations.  The state's environmental commissioner, who is also named as a defendant, has filed to dismiss the lawsuit.
