West Orange officials are testing more than a dozen municipal buildings for Legionnaires’ disease after a township worker contracted the illness.

At a council meeting, officials revealed that the town hired a private company, Omega Environmental Services, to test water at 17 municipal buildings. The bacteria that cause the disease were found in the water at town hall.

Officials say that they do not believe the worker contracted the disease from town hall, because they say that more than one person likely would have gotten sick.

Officials also say that the town’s public water supply is also safe for drinking.

Legionnaire's disease is a lung infection that can be deadly. Symptoms include pain in the chest or muscles, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, chills, headache, coughing and mental confusion.
