Huntington officials find $124K in damage to Northport golf course

One or more vandals tore through four putting greens at the Huntington Town-owned Crab Meadow Golf Course in Northport last month, authorities say — causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage.
They left three greens riddled with holes, making putting impossible. A fourth has minor damage. Town officials say it will cost around $124,000 to fix.
"It shocked me that somebody would do that," said Rudy Sobina, a Huntington Station resident. "It was like somebody went with a pickaxe."
Jerry Mayles, of Northport, agreed.
"Makes no sense, and it ruins a nice course," he said.
Suffolk police say it happened sometime between 10 p.m. on July 30 and 3 a.m. on July 31. So far, no arrests have been made.
The course remains open with temporary putting greens at the damaged holes.
Town Supervisor Chad Lupinacci said he believes whoever dug the holes had a connection to the golf course.
"They knew that area is not well lit, that there's no electricity, that there are no cameras, so I think the person wasn't just randomly picking an area, but probably knew the layout of the golf course," Lupinacci said.
Suffolk police are offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. They are urging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
Town officials said repairs would be made within three weeks. They are also stepping up security.
