HIGHLANDS -

A man accused of leaving a pit bull inside a cage on a bulkhead in Highlands to drown has surrendered to police.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office issued an arrest warrant for 36-year-old Long Branch resident Aaron Davis last week in connection with the case.

A good Samaritan found the dog, now named River, around 6:15 a.m. on July 31. The dog was in the cage, and due to the tide schedule, would have been drowned if it was not found.

Jennifer Vaz says that her own dog alerted her about the situation while they were walking along the beach. Vaz freed the dog and took it to be checked out. She is now fostering the dog.

Davis was charged with attempting to cause death or serious bodily harm to an animal, among other charges. He is expected to face a judge Wednesday.
