The Hudson County prosecutor says that she expects a final report on a fire that killed five children in Union City to be released later this month.
Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez says her office is waiting on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to complete the investigation.
Five children — four siblings and their cousin — died when a fire broke out inside their home on July 13. Several others were injured.
“This is something we take very, very seriously,” Suarez said. “We’re to do as thorough of an investigation as we can…We do have a preliminary report. It’s just not sufficient to release that…We need to feel satisfied that we’re giving the public a full investigation.”
The cause of the fire has not yet been announced. The owner of the building was cited for several code violations in the aftermath, including a failure to maintain fire alarms.
