WOODBRIDGE -

Woodbridge police have arrested three teenagers accused of setting fire to a handicapped-accessible playground.

The teens’ names have not been released due to their ages, but they were identified as two 14-year-olds and a 15-year-old. Police say that they were arrested Aug. 3.

The playground is located at the Matthew Jago School No. 28. The fire was set Aug. 1. It caused more than $100,000 worth of damage.

“These arrests send a strong message to anyone who thinks that setting a fire and destroying thousands of dollars of playground equipment is simply vandalism,” said Mayor John McCormac in a statement.

The playground was built in 2008. It was designed specifically for children with special needs.

Mayor McCormac says that the goal is to rebuild the parts of the playground that were damaged.
