Boy remains in critical condition after near-drowning at NJ water park

EAST BRUNSWICK -

A boy is in critical condition after he nearly drowned at a Middlesex County water park.

East Brunswick police were called to Crystal Springs Family Waterpark Monday around 3:30 p.m. for reports of a child who was not breathing.

Water park personnel and EMS workers performed CPR on the child. He was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center, where he is still listed in critical condition.

Officials did not release details on exactly what happened that led to the child not breathing or any details on the child's age.

According to the Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention, drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental deaths for children under the age of 15. They say about half of the cases involve swimming pools, but that children can drown in as little as an inch or two of water in a kiddie pool, bathtub, cleaning bucket or cooler.

Officials are reminding parents going to water parks to directly supervise their children and to provide non-swimmers and weak swimmers a Coast Guard-approved life vest.

Parents are also advised to read the signs at every waterpark attraction and to listen to all audio instructions provided by recordings or staff.

Finally, families should set up a meeting place at amusement parks or water parks to ensure no children are left alone.
