Blustery weekend storm cuts power to thousands

LINDEN -

Thousands of people remained without power Sunday evening in the wake of an overnight storm that packed fierce winds and pockets of heavy rain.

By 5 p.m. Sunday, JCP&L was reporting about 3,100 affected customers, mostly in Monmouth and Middlesex counties.

Crews were out making repairs, but some areas were told that their power wouldn't be restored until Monday.

One of the affected areas was Cheesequake Village, where there's a senior citizens development.

Places like Linden and Cranford saw downed trees and downed power lines in the wake of the storm.  On Swarthmore Road, a large tree was uprooted and came to rest on power lines, knocking out the electricity to several homes. But workers from the Linden DPW made quick work of the tree, cutting it down and clearing it before noon Sunday.

And the coastal storm churned up rough surf along the Jersey Shore. Beachgoers were being kept out of the water Sunday because of rip currents and rough waters in some areas.
