Toxic chemicals have been found in dozens of private water wells in East Quogue, officials say.
According to the town of Southampton, two of the 91 wells that were sampled came back with higher than the federal health advisory level of 70 parts per trillion.
Those two wells had 220 ppt and 344 ppt. Forty-three other wells did have contaminants, but measured below the federal number.
According to Newsday, testing started after officials announced in April that a monitoring well drilled near a former landfill on Damascus Road detected PFOS in a concentration more than 150 times the level at which federal officials say exposure in drinking water can cause health problems. The town has since provided bottled water to nearby residents.
“We're not convinced that [the former landfill] is the source of this contamination, but we're going to look at it,” said Supervisor Jay Schneiderman.
Schneiderman told News 12 that other sources of contamination could be coming from a local airport or from industrial and residential sites.
Schneiderman says the DEC has already hooked up those two homes that tested higher than the federal level to water filtration systems. He says the town is trying to make it easier for other homeowners to hook up to county water.
