Police: Stray bullet strikes, kills 9-year-old girl sleeping in home

Police say a 9-year-old girl was asleep in her bed when a stray bullet struck and killed her inside her family's Cumberland County home.
The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday about a block away from the girl's home in Bridgeton in the area of Church and Elmer streets.
Police say that someone fired shots at several cars and houses in the area. A stray bullet went through the home's rear wall and into a bedroom where it hit the girl, identified as Jennifer Trejo.
Police say that the girl’s relatives drove her to a hospital but she was pronounced dead there a short time later.
A neighbor says the street is considered a neutral zone between two feuding gangs.
Bridgeton Police Chief Michael Gaimari says that police presence will be increased in the area “in an effort to curb the tensions there and develop information on the shooting.”
A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the killer.
Anyone with any information about the shooting should contact Bridgeton police at 856-451-0033 or contact the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office.
