A Somerset County community is honoring the nation's veterans with symbols of patriotism, in a fitting tribute to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Military families and local residents spent their Independence Day weekend in Bedminster Township strolling through the Field of Honor, where American flags are placed to honor the lives of those who were lost.
The event is hosted by Friends of the Jacobus Vanderveer House & Museum in Bedminister Township.
"People are moved by it. They donate, purchase the flag in the end of the event they get to take the flag home," says Craig Sutherland, ofJacobus Vanderveer House & Museum.
Proceeds from the flag sales and event will support the Friends' capital campaign. They plan to raise an early 19th century barn on the grounds of the Vanderveer property.
"A couple of years ago, we didn't really have anything for Independence Day weekend. They came up with this idea, it's been a great tradition in three years," says Bedminster Township Mayor Steve Parker.
The event runs through Wednesday.
The Field of Honor program is part of a national movement that began as a way to commemorate the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. The concept has grown to include veterans.
