Rally held at Essex County Jail to protest ICE, immigration policies

NEWARK -

Demonstrators marched at the Essex County Jail Sunday afternoon in a protest against the Trump administration's immigration policies.

Rally participants called for the immediate reunification of migrant children who were separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border.

They also called for the immediate abolition of ICE, and said Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen should resign over the previous policy of family separation.

"The direction this administration is going and the way they are using ICE right now is just unsustainable if we want to have any sort of moral clarity or moral leadership in the world," says protest organizer Armando Moritz-Chapelliquen. "And as a child of immigrants myself, I am shocked and I am horrified, but I am also angry at the fact that my taxpayer dollars are being used to support the dehumanization of immigrants."

Organizers said they chose the Essex County Jail because of its contract with ICE to hold several hundred detainees.
