Police say that a man collapsed in the street and then died after being struck by a vehicle in Bridgeport.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Barnum Avenue and Helen Street around 10 p.m.
Bridgeport police say 48-year-old Derek Franklin was crossing the street when he apparently collapsed due to some type of medical condition.
Authorities say a passing minivan then struck him, leaving Franklin pinned beneath the vehicle.
Police say first responders worked to free the victim and rush him to Bridgeport Hospital, but he died several hours later.
They say the tragedy appears to have been the result of an accident and the driver will likely not be facing charges.
Friends say Franklin was originally from Norwalk but went to Bassick High School in Bridgeport and had strong ties to the community.
