Jersey City officials are putting together the final touches for what is believed to be the state’s largest Fourth of July fireworks display.
“We all come to the table in February, the plan is laid out. Obviously it's a little different this year. We have two fireworks barges as opposed to one,” says Office of Emergency Management director Greg Kierce.
The two barges will be at Exchange Place and Second Street in Jersey City. There will also be a Snoop Dogg concert at a stage near the Katyn Memorial at Exchange Place.
As many as 200,000 people are expected to show up for the celebration, especially since New York City’s fireworks display will be on the East River, out of New Jersey’s view.
“Four years ago I said that we would try to rival New York City eventually, and be the largest in the New York-New Jersey region and maybe one of the largest in the country,” says Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop about the fireworks display.
Visitors should expect to prepare for increased security measures around the celebration. Bags and backpacks brought into the area must be clear. Coolers, umbrellas, chairs and drones will be prohibited.
A full list of restrictions and road closures can be found on Jersey City’s website.
