Hazlet police officer have begun handing out trading cards to children in an effort to promote a better relationship with the community.

Each officer, including the K-9s, is stocked with 300 cards to give out to children under age 14. There are 36 cards in all that the children can collect.

Six-year-old Logan and his sister Lauren met up with some of the officers Thursday to get their cards.

“It’s cool when I see police officers. They give me high-fives,” says Logan.

Each chard has a short biography about the officers, along with a quote or something to add about their career.

“We try to do anything we can to have the youth actually engaged with our officers and have that conversation,” says Hazlet Deputy Chief Ted Wittke. “We think this is going to be a good program to do that.”

The first 20 children to collect all 36 trading cards will get a free dessert at Ralph’s Italian Ices in town.

Parents are encouraged to being their children to the police headquarters to meet the officers so that they can build their card collection.
