Six men accused of killing a Bronx teen last week appeared in court in Paterson for an extradition hearing.
All of the suspects waived extradition and will be heading back to New York City to face their charges.
The men said very little while in court and the judge asked at least two of the men to speak up when spoken to. Several of the suspects kept their heads down while in court.
The men are accused of attacking 15-year-old Lesandro Guzman-Feliz outside of a Bronx bodega last week. The men allegedly mistook Guzman-Feliz for a man in a social media sex video and dragged him out of the bodega and attacked him with knives and machetes.
Law enforcement officials say that the attack was gang-related. All of the men are allegedly members of the Trinitarios street gang.
The six suspects were arrested in Paterson over the weekend at a home said by police to be a gang stronghold.
The attack shocked the community around the world, with several celebrities coming out to offer their condolences. Friends and loved ones started the hashtag #JusticeForJunior, based off of Guzman-Feliz’s nickname.
Public defender Judy Fallon says that the families of some of the suspects have been threatened following the arrests.
“This case has been all over the news, and their families are all being threatened – children. I would ask everyone to please let the system run its course…Stop the street justice. Let the system take its course,” she said.
Tuesday’s hearing was more of a formality and no additional evidence was presented.
The men are expected to return to New York by Wednesday.
