NJ barber’s free haircuts bring joy to the homeless

NEWARK -

A New Jersey barber is spending his weekends bringing joy to the homeless by giving them haircuts.

Barber Joe Afanador can be found on most weekends on the corner of Ferry Street and Edison Lane at Peter Francisco Park, right across the street from Newark Penn Station. He’s usually armed with scissors, combs and an electric razor, too.

A legion of curious and excited people start lining up for a stylish trim, free of charge.

"A haircut really does something for you,” Afanador told News 12. “It's not just feeling clean…It gives you confidence."

Helping the homeless is nothing new for the Middlesex County resident. As a kid, he would make sandwiches and hand them out to those in need.

He also launched “Foot Solider Barbering” with some classmates while studying at Drew University.

Afanador and other volunteers travel all over the country, using an upside-down bucket as a chair, cutting the hair of the homeless and providing them the gift of human interaction.

“When you're doing something for someone else, it's still doing something for you," said Afanador.
